London Sinfonietta Residency in our College

24 January 2024

St Ignatius College was privileged to host the London Sinfonietta for a residency programme at the beginning of this week.

As part of the residency, their orchestra rehearsed in our hall for their concert presented at the Southbank Centre on Wednesday 24 January. Our Year 7s were treated to an open rehearsal, watching up close how an orchestra rehearses.

Similarly, the public also had an opportunity to watch a rehearsal, getting an inside perspective on instruments and how a musical piece is put together in an orchestra. Nine of our pupils who attended workshops with the Sinfonietta last year had the wonderful opportunity to perform their piece with the Sinfonietta in the concert at the Southbank Centre. Their performance was outstanding.

Finally, 24 Year 9 pupils attended three days of intensive workshops with presenters from the London Sinfonietta focussing on composition skills. Pupils worked in small groups and created their own compositions. With the support of some students from the Purcell Academy, our pupils also learnt how to notate their pieces. Some of the pieces may be performed at a concert in May this year at the Dugdale Centre in Enfield Town.

November, this month of remembrance, gives us a space to express gratitude through our prayers and to honor and remember those who gave their lives for peace and freedom. We pray for all who have served and continue to serve. Lest we forget.
